Tell me about PowerVu

Tell me about PowerVu
I from what I know, PowerVu is not an encryption, but a compression. That's all I know. I understand you need a special receiver to decode PowerVu. I'm assuming this whole thing is similar to 4DTV and Digicipher. Is there a way to purchase a PowerVu receiver cheap and use it to see PowerVu channels? If you have a receiver, are all the PowerVu channels ITC or are they encrypted as well?

RE: Tell me about PowerVu
PowerVu is an encryption system and it can run in several modes, including ITC. The VBA Mux on 123W is a good example of PowerVu ran ITC.

I am a little rusty on exactly how it works but PowerVu encryption is more like a point to point encryption using internal receiver numbers for each channel encryption. You can have a PowerVu receiver if you could find one and it will only be capable of getting the programming specifically encrypted/encoded for that receiver. The receivers are activated per customer for the specific channel(s) required. I believe satellite stream is the only way to reprogram them too.

The nature of the operation of the system among other things makes it very secure. It is also dedicated chip based rather than access card or CI/CAM.

RE: Tell me about PowerVu
I can get one that was used in a hospital for really cheap, like $1. I wonder if I should take the chance on it. I imagine if it was used in a hospital it would probably have some decent channels subbed to it. Is there a way for the original owner to un-sub it so it gets nothing?

RE: Tell me about PowerVu
OK, that was way too technical for me at this point! LOL! I think I got my question answered. A used PowerVu receiver off of ebay is worth exactly NOTHING!

RE: Tell me about PowerVu
Pretty much, unless you are a broadcaster and can get the numbers reassigned to your account and reprogrammed for your service. Anything PowerVu in the clear you can already get on your FTA receiver.

Sorry missed this.

Odds are they deactivated it or no longer use whatever they were using it for.

For $1 hard to go wrong though, would at least give you something to look over and tinker with.

RE: Tell me about PowerVu
PowerView is pretty much secure. Same as DCII. ITC Powerview channels you can get with your regular DVB FTA receiver. Once encryption is on, your out of luck. I belive the US army is using this system for entertainment of their Forces overseas. Security is kind of "wild" to get one of their Powerview receivers activated at the forces.
