A tip if you see a feed that stutters on Alien

When doing the initial testing I thought we had some big problems. The Sunday night football NBC S2 HD feeds stuttered and froze a bit. Sometimes the NBC S2 on 103W would do it as well.

Just so happened that I remembered reading in one of the EU forums about some channel that a guy said did similar, but only when his unit was set for 1080p. I tried it on Alien, and sure enough....perfect pictures on NBC stuff!

All I did was switch from 1080p to "auto" which selected 1080i. Other than the NBC's I normally leave Alien on 1080p. Only saw maybe a couple other channels with really minor issues when running 1080p and not enough to bother me to switch to 1080i.

Some or all of it could be with my TV too, I don't know.
I'm sure we'll find other little quirks once guys receive their Aliens and run them on different feeds that I can't get here, and in different system setups. Nice thing is we have direct manufacturer support and they are very interested in this market, so we can get things corrected and fine tuned for us.

I really do not know much about E2 other than loading up a couple of different images to see how they worked on Alien. I'll tell you what little I know and what we are going to do with E2 here.

E2 really is for the Linux guys with plenty of time to mod and tamper with it. I am really too Linux dumb and have all my time invested in adapting the Spark O/S for North America.

Briefly for the guys that don't know what E2 is...

Enigma 2 is a completely open source STB operating system in Europe. Linux based of course. I think the original images were from Dreambox. They have all sorts of cool plugs, like remote controlling your E2 box from you droid phone, video streamers and a ton more. The sky is the limit with E2. There are several different groups that regularly put out images and fixes.

Amiko Alien has a duel boot system, similar to doing duel boot windows/linux on a computer. The main boot is the easy to use Spark O/S that requires no Linux skills (like me) to operate. The second boot is where you can load Enigma 2. You can select what to boot on the front panel, and in Spark you can tell it to reboot to E2 if you have E2 installed.

I recently messed up the E2 image I was testing where it would reboot in a circle. On a normal single boot box I'd have to flash a 50Mb image VIA serial which would take all day to fix and get up and running. Instead, I just set it back to boot with Spark on the front panel and was up and running. I can reflash another E2 image by USB later.

There are a few E2 images specifically for Alien. I tried two and will make them available for download on our Alien FTP as soon as the site is up and running. Like any E2 image, they are 100% European with all EU birds and channels/lists, and they feel and work totally different than what we are used to. Guys playing with E2 will need to adapt it to work in North America. Guys that want to start NA based E2 images and share are welcome to do so. I can test them here and host/post them for other NA Alien users.

From what I can figure, E2 uses standard XML channel/sat/tp lists. Spark does not. I will make a decent 15W - 139W XML file available to our Alien guys to help get them started.

One other thing to keep in mind: Enigma 2 images need to have remotes codes installed or something like that. The ones I tried both worked with the Alien remote but had some limits and differently mapped buttons. If you use a non-Alien E2 image you'll have to install stuff for the Alien remote. I have no clue how to do that but I'm sure the Linux guys do.

I think Dreambox remotes all work with the E2 images, so if you have one that is probably the ideal way to go. Should we confirm this to be correct I could also check into getting some cheap Dream remotes if that turns out to be easier for some guys.

I will do whatever I can here to assist with the E2 stuff including testing, hosting and discussion areas. In keeping with the spirit of Enigma 2 I want to keep it open for everyone that wants to participate rather than limited to our customers like the NA Spark image will be. Alien E2 for North America will be a community effort assuming you guys want to work on it that way.

As I have time I'll post some links to European EU stuff for Alien.

In my case I run a USB HDD, the wireless N module and the wireless keyboard, so I need more than 1 port.

Alien works fine with both powered and unpowered hubs. I picked up a 4 port at Walmart for around $10. Works great with everything hooked up and running at once.

My HDD is self powered, so it does not leech of the Alien. If you have a HDD that is powered by USB only, I'd recommend getting a hub with its own power. It should run better and be better for the Alien.

Here is an overview of the wireless N WiFi module for Alien...

It is pretty much how it sounds. It is a tiny USB WiFi dongle that you plug in if you use wireless networking. Price with an Alien is around $10.

The nice thing about the Alien design is they didn't load it down with things that would drive up the cost. Many guys run wired ethernet and do not need the wireless N, saving them money over a higher cost unit with it built in.

The Spark O/S on Alien is pre-setup for this N module. For Enigma 2 it did not work with the two images I tested. Our resident Linux guys here at the forum can probably tell us what to install in the E2 to make it work for the guys that will be playing with E2.

Had a lot of trouble with rusty hardware freezing up and breaking off, but now it's done. I'm tracking the whole satellite arc visible from my Southern California location from 139W to 61W.

Had some trouble at first with alignment. I'm beginning to wonder if my inclinometer is reading way off. I found the existing polar mount pivot point was set at about 38 degrees. Thinking this way way off, I set it to my latitude - about 34.5N. The declination was set to about 5.5 degrees, seemed about right, so I left that alone.

Couldn't find a thing with this configuration. So, I tilted the mount back up to where it was, hit my southernmost satellite at 118.7. Peaked things up a bit, and that was all I needed to do for the mount alignment across the whole arc. Can my inclinometer possibly be reading correctly when it is showing about 38 degrees as set up in the picture below when my latitude is about 34.5?

My next hard lesson came with the feed horn build up. I have a C on Little Dish rig with a BCS-621 and an Avenger PLL in the rear. This set up works great, so I figured I would duplicate it on the BUD - WRONG!

To make a long story short, the Avenger in the back of the BCS-621 dropped the best C band power by about 10 -15 and lowered SNR by at least 2 on the SatHero. Couldn't find anything on Ku band to check the Avenger numbers before I removed it. Plus, it had the odd effect of moving the peaked focal distance out from the dish by about 3". I knew this was wrong simply because I ran out of button hook mount adjustment. Bottom line, use the stock BCS-621 on a BUD!
I've got it all worked out now, and using the AzBox to run it all. Stiil have a lot to learn about the AzBox, but that's for another thread. This one makes it all worthwhile for me - NASA HD!

Normally I prefer to post feeds seperate so you dont have to go thru a long list, plus it indexes better for the wildfeeds.org site. For the superbowl main feeds and pre game shows its probably easier to do them all in one thread.

I'll start with the most obvious ones, please add to this guys...

SD
72W AMC6

3776H 3255 (KCWY NBC WYOMING)

HD
103W AMC1
11880/11760H 30000 DVB-S2 (NBC East/central/mtn/west feeds)

105W AMC18
